Powersim Studio AcademicWhat-if Scenarios

Once you have created a simulation project, you are ready to run What-if Scenarios from a chosen starting point and into the future.

All the variables in the model have a definition, resulting in time series of values when calculated during simulation. These series are called the model's behaviour.

What-if Scenarios are the standard way of using Powersim Studio to analyze cause-and-effect within a simulation model:

  • Behaviour can be presented through various output objects for the end user to study.
  • The end user may give input variables new values, thus influencing the model behaviour.
  • The simulation may be paused at any time, to allow careful thinking about the next decision.
  • Also, the simulation can be rewound to an earlier point to undo a previous ill-based decision.

Simulations may be used once to analyze a particular investment opportunity or on an on-going basis as part of an integrated management system.

Hospital case

In the below example, a simulation model was used during hospital re-organization. The model reflects that a specific type of patients can be treated in two organizationally different ways.

A Hospital simulation analyzing different ways to organize wards.

The end user can easily compare the two approaches with respect to KPI targets like hospital queues, capacity and cost. Running many what-if scenarios, inducing stress in the two types of wards, made it easier to decide on the best strategy.

Benefits from using What-if Scenarios in simulations

  1. Test business strategies before committing resources.
  2. Reduce the risk involved in new strategic initiatives by allowing managers to experiment with alternative decisions in a simulated business environment.
  3. Reduce the annual planning cycle. With a Powersim simulation, executives and senior managers can collaborate to create and evaluate business scenarios, dramatically shortening the time to develop an annual plan. The plan can be continuously updated.
  4. Leverage collected business data for strategic decision making.
  5. Utilize enterprise data stored in relational databases and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets in simulations. User interfaces can display both historical data and simulated data.

Powersim Models add power, flexibility and speed to the strategic planning process.
