Are you planning to travel to Bergen this summer?
If so, we recommend a few hidden gems for you to visit during your stay.
The Museum Garden
The garden was established in 1898, is just a 10-minute walk from the centre of Bergen and is a botanical gem. There is a kitchen garden showing food plants and spices, many flower beds, two rock gardens, an arboretum with about a hundred trees in systematic order, a water garden with three ponds and a small Victoria waterlily-house.
Mount Fløyen and Fløibanen Funicular
Take the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen for breathtaking views over the city and surrounding fjords. The Fløiresturanten at the top has recently been restored to its original 1925 state. They offers outdoor seating as well as an indoor dinner menu. You can stroll back down to the city in about 45 minutes along gravel paths or return by the Funicular. These paths were established between 1880 and 1910
Bergen is surrounded by mountains
Bergen offers three famous trails that provide stunning views and can challenge your fitness level depending on your pace.
- Stoltzekleiven, shortest, yet most arduous of the tracks, features a steep climb of about 908 steps, some with stone slabs. This takes you from Fjellveien up to the mountain Sandvikspilen. It is a popular route for runners, who can reach the top in 15-25 minutes. The men’s record being an impressive 7 minutes and 46 seconds. At a regular walking pace, it takes about 30-60 minutes.
- Oppstemten is a beautiful trail featuring 750 stairs leading up towards Mount Ulriken. The stairs was constructed with the help of Himalayan Sherpas around 2016-2018. It takes about 1.5 hours or more to walk from Ulriken station, with the option to take the cable car to the top. At the summit, there is a café and wonderful hiking routes in various directions for descending. The different trails will take between 2 to 5 hours, unless you choose to take the stairs or cable car back down.
- Løvstien Løvstien is a popular hiking trail along Mount Løvstakken, and has recently become a major attraction for both locals and tourists. This is largely due to the new 383-meter-long pedestrian bridge that connects the two parts of Løvstien. It is mostly flat, making it suitable for people of all ages, including children and adults, and is also accessible for strollers. The trail is 6.4 kilometers long if you choose to walk it from end to end.
The Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene
This is the last gem we would like to mention, and you will find them behind the famous houses on Bryggen. Start at the building opposite Mariakirken (St. Mary’s Church) to see ruins of Katarinahospitalet (St. Catherine’s Hospital) built in the 1200s. You can see that the ruins are protected by glass underneath a modern building. Then cross the street towards the church with two towers, built around 1130-1170. Right next to it, you may stroll around among the ruins of the Hanseatic era of Bergen. The museum has guided tours to show how life was like in Bergen between 1360-1760 when German tradesmen lived at Bryggen.
